Oct. 3 George Washington game
GW Rallies Then Holds Off PHS
Game Statistics
Number two ranked George Washington needed to rally with three touchdowns in the third quarter and then held on to notch a 37-30 win Friday night at Stadium Field over sixth ranked Parkersburg.
The visiting Patriots, now 6-0, dug themselves out of an eight-point halftime hole, trailing 17-9 and then came up with an interception on their own one yard line with less than a minute to play to preserve their win over the scrappy Big Reds.
Finding the going tough against a determined PHS squad, George Washington went to the air in the second half against a Big Red squad missing one of its starting defensive backs due to a player ejection in last week’s game. The Patriots wound up passing for 254 yards as senior quarterback Cy Persinger completed 15 of 25 passes for 254 yards and two second half scored. Persinger also ran for a third quarter score but was sacked twice.
A turnover early in the game led to GW’s first score as the Patriots got the ball on the PHS 29 and ran freshman standout Jaden Black three times for a touchdown but Javel Chandler blocked the extra point kick.
The Big Reds answered with a 29 yard field goal by Cole Sisk and got the ball back after a punt and began a successful nine play, 79 yard drive to take the lead on a 38 yard run by Sylas Cheuvront when the senior went up the middle, then cut right and outran the defenders.
The Big Reds got the ball back after another punt that Brady Thorn returned 22 yards to the GW 26. Six plays later Alex Greer hit Thorn from 21 yards away for the touchdown. Thorn was able to get behind the GW defender in the end zone and Greer threw a perfect pass. Cole Sisk’s extra point kick made it 17-6 in favor of the Big Reds.
Persinger then took to the air and brought his team to a first and goal at the four before Adam Elder came up with a big stop and forced the visitors to settle for a 28 yard field goal as time expired to trailed 17-9 at halftime.
The Patriots scored just over two minutes into the second half on a 75 yard pass deep over the middle to Sameje Wesley and then pulled a halfback pass completion for the two-point conversion to tie the game at 17-all.
After forcing a punt, GW put together a go-ahead TD march highlighted by four completions and a seven yard run by Persinger with 3:32 left in the third quarter. The GW conversion failed and PHS responded with a 76 yard touchdown run by Ethan Jones but could not go ahead when the Big Red extra point kick was off the mark leaving the score at 23-all.
Another pass-dominated drive by GW was capped on a 14 yard pass to Black to make it 30-23 with 16 seconds left in the third quarter.
GW took a 37-23 lead when the Patriots took advantage of a short field to go 29 yards in just three plays with Black going over from the one after a 28 yard run.
But the Big Reds were not about to quit with nearly 11 minutes left to play as they scored on a one yard run by Greer that was set up by a great 36 yard reception by Chandler to the three yard line just one play after a 23 yard catch by the same player had been wiped out by a penalty. Cole Sisk’s kick made it 37-30 with 4:18 left to play.
Devin Widman recovered the ensuing onside kick by PHS at midfield and Greer went to work with a 23 yard run on third down and then on fourth and 14 from the GW 31 he found Sylas Cheuvront with a 14 yard completion to keep the drive alive.
A completion to Cheuvront to the 11 yard line was wiped out by a penalty and on third down Greer tried the end zone but was intercepted at the one yard line with 40 seconds left in the game.
The upset bid failed but the Big Reds showed they could play on even terms with one of the state’s two best team. PHS lost its opener to number one ranked Morgantown.
The Big Reds held a 239-99 edge in rushing yardage as Jones ran for 109 yards, Greer 69 and Cheuvront 63 but GW had a 254-86 advantage in passing as Persinger hit 15 of 25. Sameje Wesley had eight catches for 149 yards for the winners while Black, only a freshman, had 99 yards rushing. The Big Reds had a 30:45-16:47 margin in time of possession as their strategy of keeping the ball out of the hands of the Patriots nearly worked.
